last year I went on a canoe trip with 9 of my friends. we portaged la riviere noire in quebec for 5 days. we went through rapids, and pretty heavy terrain and for most of us, including myself, it was our first time ever canoeing, let alone going through rapids. i did pretty well i must say, there were just several little snags along the way. some of them were embarassing and some were just funny. before i left i noticed i had a pimple on my penis that i started to stress over, luckily within 3 days it had popped. my wisdom teeth were coming in and they started to get really infected in the middle of the trip. i didn’t have anything to disinfect them with, except some whiskey, so i gargled that every couple of hours. one night by the fire i got some bug bite on my upper lip that ballooned to the size of a small cherry tomato, at first i was worried because i was thinking it could have been a spider bite or something worse. luckily in the morning it was gone. i cut my foot on a can that was hidden in the sand. that was easily fixed with some bandages, but being a first timer, i wasn’t very prepared and didn’t bring proper shoes so it was kind of annoying to always change bandages while canoeing. finally the most troubling thing happened on the last day of the trip. for most of the 5 days i was pretty blocked up with shit, and hadn’t had a satisfying bowel movement. when we were about 8 hours from the end of the river i was taking a shit in the forest and i was pushing hard but nothing was coming out..of my ass. something was coming out of my penis. it was semen. i immediately told my friends about it and needless to say, they were pretty shocked and just started laughing. my friends bring it up every once and awhile and it’s not so embarassing anymore, just weird.

There had been one moment where she believed he had perhaps looked her way. A distracted half conscious, swaying, lazy look, caught in the familiar whirlwind that is music, band, and audience, the ambience and setting of an unmatched moment of time, that perhaps his eyes met hers in. This moment was presumably lost on them both, for neither being fully aware if it had truly happened continued on in much the same manner as before, so like a tide, rolling over them all, as so many affiliated moments are also lost to memory. Her state was something of an antithesis for she seemed to be made up of nothing at all and yet filled up, deep below her now abounding surface, swollen like a sweet berry, sumptuous and lush in sight and taste. She was unsure of the exact moment where her heart seemed to pop out of her chest and float away. She did not know when its airy beats gave up on blood and began to pump the sweat above their heads, the perspiration and the words that stirred the current in the pool upon the roof. Nor could she guess what became of her anatomy, find the start or end of her capillaries, the ghosts of her missing arteries, but when the last note hit as he stroked the very last string, these things were all quite certain. She felt only calm and wonder, full of patience and vehemence, it was assured that she was in love, and that love felt beautiful, there was no room in her for greed or voracity or avarice. She knew that she would speak to them, and having neither qualms nor uneasiness nor doubt she was the very portrait of complacency. She felt only that extreme happiness one feels when only the most favourable of circumstance is assured, humbled to a point of exultation at the wonder of love. She had semi-formulated intentions, ideas grounded entirely on feeling, as if she knew for certain the veracious path to self ebullience. She knew nothing of them but that they had, despite their intentions, most assuredly started a flame inside her heart.

A band consisting of a gangly curly haired yodelling man, a bass playin cord snapping animal, a short cut drummer with a broken cymbal and a knack for playin in his socks, and a quiet pasty skinned man with a REALLY sweet hat, has stolen my musical devotion and won’t let go of it! 4 months and 4 days have passed since a friend of mine posted a message on facebook. “Born Ruffians are coming to Seattle! Just did a Victory Dance!!” Little did I know that soon after I would be slowly, and willingly, sucked into this moderately known Canadian band’s way of music. The first sound to hit my ears was the uproaring Hummingbird intro, so much energy flew out of the intro you couldn’t help but dance! The rest of the red yellow and blue album took time for me, barnacle goose was next on my #1 then came foxes mate for life, even the songs I disliked became lodged into my brain at work, there was no way to not keel over and love the music. Badonkadonkey, red elephant (which I’m 99% sure is talking about lukes lower member) they all made sense to me. All of my former tastes in music dissolved away. Just when I couldn’t mentally handle another amazing song that nobody in my county has even heard of…. you release say it. Once again, I wasn’t satisfied at first, then day by day it spread like a sick disease on a mission to make me like it. Do you know what happened next Mitch? Luke? Steve? Andy? MY HEAD IMPLODED.. no, actually it ended up with a group of my friends and I turning cheap walmart T shirts into kickass Red Yellow & Blue shirts and marching to Seattle to meet you all. Before I knew it I was stalking luke into the bathroom to talk to him(HOW COULD NOBODY ELSE NOT NOTICE THE TALL GANGLY GUY WALKING BY!), man was that awesomely awkward, then Mr. Derosier turns into a momma and takes a bunch of pictures of our shirts(Fame bitches). Between all of that, the great show, and Mitch She-saiding me in the audience, and shaking my hand not one, not two, but six times, it was the best night I’ve ever had. The past four months have been a very strange time in my life filled with yelling OH MAN out the window of my truck, bonding with a very special girl because of your music, and far too many fun moments that would have never been possible without you guys. So to finish this, what I have to say is. CANADA AIN’T SO BAD EH! ~ Derek

    Ruffian Mitch SAYS:

Same thing happened to Luke. But his lump came more from the love making banshee than the singing. I think.

    That wasn’t a dream.

Nowadays there’s always too much going on. There’s the internet, there’s your social status, your appearance, the media, and all that shit. But when it all boils down, the only thing that matters is your view on life. Some people don’t care about life. They live it, do some stuff, and then die. Some people care about every second of their live, and that it must be absolutely perfect. My name is Tessa, and I suffer from Atelophobia, the fear of imperfection. I must have my assignments in before the due date, I need my room to be absolutely clean every day. The kitchen sink must never have any dirty dishes in it, and the pillows on my sofa have to be fluffed to perfection. But that’s just who I am. It was keeping me from being relaxed and calm. It was keeping me from just relaxing a whole Sunday, instead I’d be cleaning dishes or doing homework that was due the next week. I was like this until I was 13. When I was introduced to indie music. It was actually the best day of my life by far. Since that day, I have piled my iTunes library with 5,340 songs of pure happiness. I started listening to music 24/7. On the bus, in the car, at home, doing homework, road trips. Every single day. I started getting obsessed with Born Ruffians. When I turned 15, I listened to Foxes Mate for Life in the morning as my alarm clock and at night while going to sleep. All of a sudden, I started sleeping in until 11, and do nothing but watch old scary movies on Sundays. My life was changing, because of music. Who thought that just a couple of beats and melodies could make a person like me, a better Tessa. My family and friends have all noticed a difference in me, a good difference. And I can’t thank anyone else besides you guys. Born Ruffians is my go-to music for driving. I feel infinite & happy & free & rebellious & accomplished & amazed. You four know what you are doing, you know how you want people to feel. And I absolutely can not wait to see you guys in two weeks at the Bell House. Honestly, thank you so much.
